NW Briefs | Opener a 10-1 drilling for UW

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — It wasn’t a promising start to the 2007 baseball season as Washington dropped a 10-1 decision to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on Friday.

Third baseman Brent Morel led the way for the Mustangs, driving in three runs with a pair of doubles.

Morel entered the game with a .481 average. His two-out, bases-clearing double in the third opened the scoring for Cal Poly (6-6).

UW starter Nick Hagadone (0-1) suffered the defeat, surrendering eight runs (five earned) on six hits over 4-2/3 innings.

OTHER BASEBALL

Evan Wells scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth as Gonzaga upset defending national champion Oregon State 6-5 in the opening game of the Coca-Cola Spring Training Tournament in Surprise, Ariz.

The victory was the Bulldogs’ (2-5) first triumph against a ranked opponent this year. The defeat is the first of the season for the ninth-ranked Beavers (7-1).

Wells lead the Zags at the plate, going 3 for 4 with three RBI.

•Ricardo Cates had a pair of hits, including a two-run homer, to lead California State Northridge (8-4) to a 5-3 victory over visiting Washington State in the Cougars’ season opener.

•A pair of California Lutheran (3-4) pitchers limited Pacific Lutheran (3-2) to just four hits in a 7-1 victory in the Arizona Desert Classic in Anthem, Ariz.

•Derek O’Konek had three RBI and Tyler Farrington two for Central Washington (2-1), but Colorado School of Mines (2-3) scored two runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to win 11-10 in Pueblo, Colo.

•Cal Poly Pomona (4-3) collected 22 hits in a 17-4 home victory over Saint Martin’s (1-6).

SWIMMING

Jessica Buchanan set a Washington women’s school record in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.74) to place 11th in the Pac-10 championships in Long Beach, Calif. The Huskies are in eighth place as a team with 291 points.

•Olympian Tara Kirk of Bremerton won the 50-meter breaststroke (31.16) at the Missouri Grand Prix in Columbia, Mo., with Megan Jendrick of Puyallup second.

TENNIS

The Washington men (7-1) had no problem with Portland (3-3), winning 7-0 at home. The No. 15 Huskies won every doubles match and did not drop a set in singles to improve to 46-0 overall against Portland. Alex Slovic and Daniel Chu each won their doubles matches to move past Eric Drew into the top spot on the career victory list with 73.

•Marjolein van de Ven remained perfect in dual-match play with a straight-set victory over Kasia Jakowlew, 6-3, 7-5, but that was the only highlight for the Washington State women (8-2, 1-0 Pac-10) as they lost 6-1 to host Arizona (4-3, 1-0).

•Washington (0-5, 0-1) failed to win a match in its women’s Pac-10 opener, losing 7-0 to host Arizona State (5-1, 1-0).

SOFTBALL

Ashley Osman had two game-winning hits as Western Washington (3-2) advanced to the semifinals of the Silver Bracket at the Schutt Sports Division II Lead-Off Softball Classic in Phoenix with a 3-2 victory over Seattle University and a 4-2 triumph over Cameron. Sara Badgley threw a three-hit shutout, striking out 13, and also hit a pair of home runs in leading Central Washington (2-1) to a 5-0 victory over Cameron (1-9) in the same tournament.

INDOOR TRACK

Washington State’s Justin Woods and McKenzie Garberg were double winners at the Vandal Indoor in Moscow, Idaho. Woods won the men’s 200 meters in 21.23 seconds and the 60 meters in 6.79. Garberg took the women’s discus (156 feet, 7 inches) and the shot put (49-7 ¼).

GYMNASTICS

Veronica Porte won the vault and all-around competition as San Jose State (4-7) earned a 193.625-190.275 victory over Seattle Pacific (4-7).

SOCCER

Washington men’s coach Dean Wurzberger announced his 2007 recruiting class, led by U.S. U-17 national-team star forward Ellis McLoughlin of Seattle. Also in the group are Brad Keller of Scottsdale, Ariz., Beau Macaluso of Tacoma, Taylor Mueller of Sammamish and Matt Van Houten of Beaverton, Ore.
