Montgomery County football coach resigns

Montgomery County head football coach Brant Smith has resigned, principal Luke Smith said Wednesday.

Brant Smith, who was at Montgomery County for one season, said he was taking the offensive coordinator position at Appling County.

“It didn’t seem to me there was a commitment from our [school] board for the football team,” Brant Smith said. “They’re going to struggle until they finally make a commitment.”

The new coach will be the fifth in five years for the Eagles, who are 1-39 since a 5-6 season in 2003. They haven’t had a head coach stay longer than four years since John Peacock led the team to a state semifinal while coaching from 1980-91. Since then, it has been tough for Montgomery County to keep coaches.

“That’s been a priority every year,” Luke Smith said. “The last two men that were hired for this job, those were folks who had some strong ties to the area. We thought that was important. We would like to have some stability, but there have been many problems that have prevented that from happening.”

Montgomery County is located in Mount Vernon, south of Interstate 16 between Macon and Savannah.
