Construction students learn basic job skills as prep for apprenticeship

“Excuse me. Did you forget to tuck in your shirttail?” Tim Krejci barked at a man in his 20s.

That’s just one of Krejci’s ­early-morning greetings to students who are learning how to present themselves every day for good-paying construction jobs.

He has many more, all intended to remind students of the serious nature of construction work.

An experienced union carpenter and former project manager, Krejci is in charge of an eight-week training course for men and women who hope to graduate with job offers from contractors in the building and construction trades. (more…)

Probe into Valero refinery Inferno begins

The fire did not turn out to be lethal and all employees at the Valero Energy Corp. were safe. The company claimed that the fire started at the refinery’s “propane de-asphalting unit,” where fuel is processed at high temperatures.

Valero Energy Corporation is a Fortune 500 company based in San Antonio, Texas. It has approximately 22,000 employees on its rolls and generates annual revenue of more than $80 billion. The company owns and operates 17 refineries throughout the United States, Canada and the Caribbean with a combined throughput capacity of approximately 3.3 million barrels per day. (more…)

Victory Chant tongue-tied for Diamond

Trainer Leon Macdonald will be relying on the strength of Greg Childs and a tongue tie to get deposed Blue Diamond favourite back to the winners’ circle in Saturday’s Group One feature at Caulfield.

Victory Chant was installed as favourite for Victoria’s richest race for two-year-olds after his spectacular debut on his home track at Morphettville in December. (more…)

Coal City wrestlers keep it in family

Odeens, four others reach semifinals CHAMPAIGN — Since he was a little boy, Coal City High School’s Chase Odeen has dreamed of taking a place alongside his brother in wrestling’s Grand March.

Odeen, a sophomore 152-pounder, won two matches Friday at the Class A state tournament and moved into the semifinals. He needs two more victories today to bring home another state championship for the Coalers and his family. (more…)

Ahmadinejad marks revolution anniversary asserting Iran will not halt uranium enrichment

TEHRAN, Iran: President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad vowed that Iran would not give up uranium enrichment but he otherwise refrained from making fiery statements during celebrations on the 28th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution.

The hard-line president said Sunday that he was prepared to negotiate with the international community and his speech fell short of an expected announcement that Iran had started installing 3,000 centrifuges to enrich uranium at its Natanz plant. (more…)

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad struck a defiant yet vague tone on Sunday, telling Iranians during the 28th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution that their country would not give up uranium enrichment but was prepared to talk with the international community.The hard-line leader’s remarks, which came days before a U.N. Security Council deadline demanding Tehran halt enrichment or face further sanctions, fell short of an expected announcement that Iran had started installing 3,000 centrifuges to enrich uranium at its Natanz plant.
