HELENA, Mont. — The copper mining, refining and smelting company Asarco LLC is asking a judge to prevent its parent company from obtaining a $40.5 million tax refund.
In paperwork filed this week in a Texas bankruptcy court, Asarco requests an injunction to keep mining giant Grupo Mexico from going after the money from the Internal Revenue Service. The company instead wants the judge to rule that the refund belongs to Asarco.The money comes from tax overpayments Asarco’s former parent company, East Coast-based Asarco NJ, paid from 1987 through 1989. MONROEVILLE, Pa. – At first glance, everything seems to be going well for CSE Corp.
Sales of the emergency air packs CSE pioneered for coal mining are up more than fourfold. And the small, family-owned operation that used to produce about 1,000 air packs a month has orders for 55,000, enough to prompt a small-scale expansion.
But company President Scott Shearer is getting pressure from the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration and even members of Congress. They want to know why CSE and other air pack manufacturers haven’t delivered more products in the wake of state and federal legislation that requires thousands of new devices in underground mines. PARAMARIBO, Suriname: Labour talks are progressing at Iamgold Corp.’s Rosebel gold mine in Suriname, the company said on Wednesday.
But the Toronto-based company has not been able to resume production at the South American mine because workers are still on what the company calls an illegal strike.
“They are still not working, they are still trying to negotiate a deal,” said Iamgold spokeswoman Lisa Doddridge.

La Paz – The Bolivian government on Friday nationalized a mineral processing plant operated by a subsidiary of the Swiss company Glencore International.
‘I am delivering on the mandate given by the Bolivian people, which was to recover our natural resources,’ President Evo Morales told workers at the Vinto plant.
